How To Apply SPF
When it comes to sun protection, how you apply your SPF is just as important as which one you choose. Daily SPF use helps prevent premature ageing, pigmentation, and long-term damage caused by UV rays — but only if you apply it correctly. Here’s how to get it right.
1. Apply the Right Amount
Most people under-apply SPF, reducing its effectiveness. You should use about two fingers’ worth of sunscreen (index and middle finger) for your face and neck. For the body, a shot-glass-sized amount is recommended but apply more when necessary.
2. Apply as the Last Step of Skincare
SPF should be the final step of your morning skincare routine — after cleanser, serums, and moisturiser (if your SPF isn’t moisturising enough on its own). This ensures the product can form an even, protective layer.
3. Don’t Forget Key Areas
Many areas are often missed. Make sure to cover:
-
Ears
-
Eyelids
-
Lips (use an SPF lip balm)
-
Hairline and parting
-
Back of the neck and tops of hands
4. Wait Before Makeup
Allow your SPF to set for around 5–10 minutes before applying makeup to avoid disturbing the coverage.
5. Reapply Throughout the Day
SPF wears off with time, sweat, and touch. Reapply every 2 hours if you are outdoors, or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. For reapplication over makeup, consider a spray, stick, or cushion compact SPF.
6. Use It Year-Round
Up to 80% of UV rays pass through clouds, so SPF is just as important on cloudy or winter days as it is in summer.
